Do you need a business licence in Ontario?

Ontario doesn't have one general business licence. Requirements come from three places, depending on what you do and where.

1. Your city or town

Municipalities licence certain kinds of business, often food, personal services, contractors, taxis and short-term rentals, and set zoning rules on where a business can operate. Ask city hall before you sign a lease or open from home.

2. The province

• Selling or serving alcohol: a licence from the AGCO.
• Commercial trucks: a CVOR certificate.
• Childcare centres: a licence from the Ministry of Education.
• Compulsory trades such as electricians and plumbers: certification through Skilled Trades Ontario.

3. Public health

Restaurants and other food premises, and personal service settings like salons, must tell their local public health unit before opening and are inspected.
